We’re back from our summer hiatus to bring you our September newsletter, just in time to kick off National Recovery Month!
 
 

THE ROUND UP

On August 31, we honored International Overdose Awareness Day as a time to remember those we lost and a time to demand action to prevent overdose deaths.

September is National Recovery Month and the theme this year is “Recovery is Real: Restoring Every Aspect of Life.”

To support recovery, it is crucial to reduce the stigma associated with substance use and the various forms of recovery.
 

DATA FOR CHANGE

From our report, Substance Use, Stigma, and Pennsylvania’s Criminal Justice System: A Look Forward, from earlier this year: 

Even as stigma is widespread in Pennsylvania, optimism and understanding about recovery appear to have risen in recent years. In 2021, 15% of Pennsylvanians reported that those who struggle with drugs and/or alcohol had a high chance of maintaining recovery; by 2024, that figure had more than doubled. Meanwhile, the share of respondents who said there is a low chance of recovery declined from 23% in 2021 to 12% in 2024.

  • A big thank you to the Dauphin County Board of Commissioners and the Dauphin County Opioid Remediation Advisory Board for approving our proposal. We’re excited to partner to equip first responders with the knowledge and skills to better engage with and support individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges in Dauphin County!

  • This month, our team will be presenting at the Pennsylvania State Police Investigators Academy to educate new investigators from across the Commonwealth on mental health and substance use. 

  • We will also be presenting at the 2025 County Chief Adult Probation and Parole Officers Association of Pennsylvania, highlighting our work, and subsequent report, with the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to better address substance use in Pennsylvania’s criminal justice system.
