New Report Finds Entrenched Stigma Toward People Who Use Drugs, Suffer From Addiction, and Are In Recovery

Elevyst and PRO-A collaborated with RIWI to harness Random Domain Intercept Technology (RDIT) to conduct a large-scale survey of Americans’ opinions regarding social stigma against people who use drugs or are in recovery.

This report discusses the results of the survey, while providing social and political context to help account for trends in the data.

Americans believe that stigma persists at a high rate, despite various efforts from the government and nonprofits attempting to reduce stigma. This is constant across a vast range of demographic factors, including age, race, and socioeconomic status. Moreover, the reduction of stigma is a goal that a wide range of addiction recovery and harm reduction advocates can support, making this a ripe area for new “big tent” advocacy efforts.
